Yearning to breathe free play kit

This Dramaterials™ Elementary School Play Kit is an early 20th century American history immigration play. "Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free." These words found on the Statue of Liberty were often the first inscribed words seen by immigrants coming to this country. This play follows the stories of several families in different stages of beginning a new life in America. Students step into the shoes of immigrant children and adults as they prepare to leave their homelands, journey on a boat, wait in line at Ellis Island and make friends in new neighborhoods. The play ends with your students having the opportunity to share their own family's immigration history. Performance runs about 45 minutes starring 19 of your 2nd, 3rd or 4th Graders. Protective "Director's" 3-ring case binder holds 14-page script, Staging, Props and Costuming Notes from the playwright and a Theater Unit Checklist. CD features one song, "Yearning To Breathe Free," as well as instrumental performance track, lyrics and lead sheet. This original song by January M. Akselrad is archived in the Ellis Island Immigration Museum in New York City. A Cast List is included with blanks for your students' names.
